Memorials and Headstones
The erection of memorials and headstones is permitted on lairs where the Exclusive Right of Burial has been granted. All memorials must be constructed and erected by a Monumental Mason adhering to the recommendations formulated by the National Association of Monumental Masons and any pertinent to Clackmannanshire Council. A list of local monumental masons is provided below.
There is no requirement for a headstone or memorial to be erected. This is a matter of choice for the family or the executors.
Memorials are usually constructed of stone material and should not contain wood, plastic or glass. Monumental Masons will be able to advise of the range available with current costs. All inscriptions must be authorised in advance by the Council. The Council has a legal responsibility to approve all inscriptions to ensure standards of decency are maintained.
Lair owners, through their Mason, must apply to the Council with exact details of the construction of the memorial, the method of erection and the inscription. The Council will then grant permission for the memorial to be erected.
Please note that the lair owner is liable for any damage or injury caused by the state of the repair of the memorial or headstone erected. The registered owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the memorial. The Council will make some arrangements to contact owners to inform them that their memorial has fallen and provide advice on how to repair and re-erect.
Flowers
Only one flower vase will be allowed on each lair and placed in the space provided at the head of each lair, i.e. the crown head or on the base of the memorial.
Additional flower vases may be allowed at the discretion of the Cemetery Officer.
