Publications and Design Best Value Review

The highlights shown in the summary include:

Design

  • The monthly job list is circulated to ensure all clients are aware of the Unit's workload and the range of clients they work with.
  • A benchmarking (dummy tender) exercise with five private sector design agencies in March 1998 showed that costs and turnaround times compare very favourably with those available in the private sector. It also confirmed that the unit offers services not available at low cost in the private sector, e.g. of project management and coherence of image.
  • A design project completion survey introduced in March 1998 on design, project management and print quality is being analysed on a job by job basis to ensure continuous improvement. Feedback has been very positive.
  • The Unit tests publications – e.g. the Council newspaper and A to Z Guide - with external customers to assess satisfaction with their design. Community groups including community councils and two pupil councils at Alva Academy have been involved and testing with community groups continues to take place, most recently in March this year.

Process improvements have brought a 25% increase in efficiency in terms of days saved.

Print supply

  • Each time a Designer requires a print job to be undertaken three listed suppliers quote prices. Suppliers undergo a twice-yearly audit to validate performance. This system means the Council can be guaranteed the best cost with no loss of quality, as is confirmed by clients' feedback indicating their satisfaction with print quality.

Steps were taken to ensure all services were aware of the list of approved printers and extra measures were taken to ensure local printers were included on this list.
