Information Technology (IT) Services

The personal workstations and telephones on staff desks are the obvious front-end of IT Services and these are supported by a complex infrastructure of communications networks, software, file servers and application servers.

IT Services are responsible for assisting services with the specification of ICT needs and the subsequent commissioning, purchase, operation and maintenance of computer and communications equipment and software. All of the equipment and many of the services are purchased from external suppliers but under the guidance and supervision of IT Services.

  • Policy and Service Development
    IT advice to the Council, elected members, services and officers of the Council and to any person in relation to the discharge of the Council's functions. Develop and maintain IT strategy in conjunction with corporate strategies and initiatives.
  • Procurement
    Procurement of hardware, software and services including definition of requirements, product appraisal, evaluation and implementation.
  • Systems Development
    Systems development including specification, analysis, design, programming, testing, documenting, commissioning and maintenance of bespoke and packaged applications software.
  • Operational Services
    Provision of services including data preparation, input control, data processing, data management, archiving and production and distribution of output on central and distributed systems. Maintenance of ICT resources.
  • Fixed and Mobile Telecommunications
    Provision of email, internet and intranet access, voice and data networks over local and wide area networks and the provision of mobile communications systems.
  • User and Infrastructure Support
    Support for a range of user ICT resources including general assistance, technical services, problem resolution and training.
  • Customer Services
    Provision of ICT service requests and fault reporting. mobile and fixed line phone administration and support.
  • Security
    Security of ICT resources and data against virus attack, theft, piracy, unauthorised access and damage. Contingency planning for, and recovery from, disaster situations.
  • Contract Management
    The provision, procurement, monitoring and supervision of any IS/IT service provided to the Council by any person or persons.
