Tullibody Residents' Art in the Spotlight as New Gallery Opens
Tuesday 26th August 2008
An exhibition of work created in Tullibody's Art Shop opens this week to mark the launch of Clackmannanshire's new art gallery and workshop.
'Mapping Routes Beyond Faces' is a journey through colour, light and sound designed by resident digital media artist Kenny Bean which charts and celebrates the increased creative confidence of local people who have come through the doors of The Art Shop.
The exhibition demonstrates the personalities and creative talent of local residents through a range of dynamic work in the form of video projections, sound, photography and creative writing.
The Art Shop opened 18 months ago, transforming a former newsagents into a creative community space. Council contracted artists and craftspeople in residence, including the area's two writers in residence, have provided a wealth of arts and crafts opportunities. The project was awarded Pathfinder Status by the Scottish Government in recognition of this example of good practice.
'Mapping Routes Beyond Faces' will be exhibited at the Aberdona Gallery for Artisans. Aberdona is a newly established workshop facility in a setting that inspires a range of artistic collaborations. A broad range of work from various projects organised by Clackmannanshire Council's Cultural and Community Service throughout the county will be on view to complement the main exhibition and illustrate the county's growing national reputation in the arts.
Most of the projects and workshops held at Aberdona focus on traditional crafts including ceramics/pottery, glass, silversmithing and woodwork production. Public art consultations, such as those involving internationally acclaimed sculptor Andy Scott, take place here. Aberdona currently offers the best exhibition space in the county, and while the main exhibition will be upstairs, the ground floor will show a snapshot of what has been achieved over recent years.
This includes:
- Work with Glasgow School of Art to produce public art
- Work with Edinburgh College of Art on glass production
- Andy Scott incorporating residents' ideas into his stunning sculptures
- A story box - a creative writing digital media collaboration
- Rap - film and sound production
- A collaboration between NHS Forth Valley and Glasgow School of Art centred on smoking cessation - quitters helped with creative life skills and a the creation of an innovative 'quitting pack'
- Work from Clackmannanshire's new community gallery 'The Vessel' with residents work selling alongside designers with international reputation
Mapping Routes Beyond Faces is open free of charge to the public from Saturday 30th August to Saturday 27th September, daily from 10am - 4pm, closed Wednesdays and Sundays. Kenny Bean will be in attendance on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the exhibition.
