Research & Information - Children's Services

This page provides some general information on the statistics and information available on children's services provided by the Council.

  • There are 10,773 children aged between 0 - 17 years of age (22% of the Clackmannanshire population)
  • In 2007, children in primary school numbered 3,391 and secondary school 3,030
  • About 39% of Clackmannanshire pupils live in the most deprived areas
  • In 2006/07, there were 131 Child Protection referrals, with 29 children placed on the register
  • As at 31 March 2006, there were 182 Looked After Children in Clackmannanshire
  • In 2006/07, 59% of Looked After Children were accommodated away from home

The Research and Information Team provide assistance in the collection and reporting of information and statistics to Service managers and the Scottish Government. Many of the statistics collected are contained in the annual Children's Services Bulletin. The annual statistics may be updated periodically with the Children's Services Statistical Overview.

Child Protection

Some key facts for the year 2006/07 from the Child Protection Statistics 2006-07 Key Facts sheet are:

  • 131 child protection referrals (55% boys and 45% girls)
  • Only 28% of child protection referrals resulted in a case conference
  • 81% of children subject to a case conference were abused by a birth parent
  • 78% of children going to a case conference are later placed on the register
  • the two main reasons for registration are emotional abuse and physical neglect

Looked After Children

The Key Facts sheet on Children Looked After Statistics 2006-07 provide more detail on 31 March 2007:

  • on 31 March 2007, there were 182 children looked after by Clackmannanshire Council
  • male children are 58% of children looked after
  • 42% of looked after children are placed at home with their parents
  • 19% of looked after children are looked after by friends and relatives
