Alva Games 2006


The Council and the Alva Games Committee are working in partnership to plan a week long programme of activities to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alva Games. Local groups and organisations will be involved in competitions, fund raising opportunities and arranging family entertainment.
The main programme of activities will start with a family day which includes a costumed parade through the main street in Alva, a community market, music and street entertainment all on Sunday 2nd July 2006.

Starting at 3pm on Saturady 8th July, the programme is being introduced by John Beattie and Katie Still, and you can contact the programme by emailing sportsound@bbc.co.uk. For those in Scotland you can hear the games on the radio on 92 to 95 FM.
All this week the Karen Dunbar show is promoting the Alva Highland games as its gala day of the week leading up to the games at the weekend. The show's on air on BBC Radio Scotland between 9.30am and 11am every week day, on 92 to 95 FM and 810 medium wave.
Programme of Activities
All during the following week the Council's Sports and Leisure Teams will deliver a programme of summer activities.
In addition there will be exhibitions, a country dancing festival, centenary bowling competitions and opportunities to reinforce the links between health and sport.

Saturday 1st July
- Ceilidh for invited guests of Alva Games, Cochrane Hall
Sunday 2nd July
- Sponsored Dogathon for Guide Dogs for the Blind – registration at 09.30 am
- Parade through Alva to the entrance of Cochrane Park. Departs Alva Industrial Park 12.30 pm
- Funday Sunday, Cochrane Park, with live Scottish music and dance, battle re-enactments, falconry displays, puppet shows and street performers, along with a variety of craft, activity and games stalls run by local organisations - 1.00-5.00 pm. ENTRY FREE
Monday 3rd July
- Opening Ceremony of Exhibition & History of the Games performed by HRH The Duke of Gloucester- Cochrane Hall.
Tuesday 4th July
- Best Dressed Shop Window Competition
- Craft Exhibition, Dalmore Centre, 10 am - 12 noon
- 7-a-side Football Competition Cochrane Park, 2.00 - 6.00 pm. Spectators Welcome
- Sequence Dance, Parklands Centre 1.30pm - 3.30pm
Wednesday 5th July
- Scottish Backhold Wrestling Competition, Cochrane Park, 5.00 - 8.00 pm. FREE ENTRY. Competitor Entries taken at Park
- Bingo Tea, Parklands Centre, 7.30pm
Thursday 6th July
- Exhibition and History of the Games opens in Mill Trail Visitors Centre
- Scottish Country Dance, Cochrane Hall. £5.00 Entry
Saturday 8th July - Games Day
- 150th ALVA GAMES take place in JOHNSTONE PARK, ALVA commencing 12.30 pm
Children's Activities - 3rd to 7th July
To mark the 150th year of Alva Games, there will be a week of events and activities for children aged between 4-16 years of age. All activities will be held in the Dalmore Centre, Alva. Further Activities Information
- Ongoing schools programme giving taster sessions in Mini Highland Games
- Inter schools Junior bowling competition running between 1st and 8th July at Alva Bowling Green with the final taking place on the morning of the 8th July

The Games themselves take place on Saturday 8th July and arrangements are in hand to make sure that this year's programme will reflect the importance of the 150th anniversary.

Whilst the Council and the Games Committee are heavily involved in delivering and promoting the events, there are opportunities for individuals and businesses to help through sponsorship
