Information & Reference Service

If you are looking for a quick guide to some of the more useful Internet sites in various topical areas why not visit our page at Reference Central?
Library members can now gain remote access to the NewsUK and Encylopedia Britannica news and reference databases by clicking on the icons on that page.
We also operate a traditional Information and Reference Service which is concentrated in Alloa Library. From the resources held there we are able to answer a wide range of enquiries ranging from questions about statutory and voluntary organisations and particulars of businesses through to topics relating to science, sport, arts and cultural affairs.
The library holds a range of statistical information as well as material relating to careers, current affairs and social welfare. Coverage also includes laws and guides to law, foreign language dictionaries, biographical information and general encyclopaedias. Practical information relating to telephone books and postcodes is also included.
We receive a large amount of European Union material as a result of our designation as a European Relay and we also act as a Scottish Parliament Partner Library.
The material available in Alloa Library includes What's Happening in the Scottish Parliament, Bills, Business Bulletins, Annual Reports, written answers and reports and minutes of various committees. Scottish Parliament Information Centre [SPICe] research papers cover a variety of parliamentary and non-parliamentary topics. There are also documents relating to the Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine Railway Bill.
In addition to its other activities the service is responsible for the Web4U suites of computers at Alloa and other branches. Use of these is free, although users must sign up using their library card.
The Reference and Information Service operates in tandem with the Local Studies Library and with Clackmannanshire Archives.
The Open Learning Service, which allows readers to borrow training packs for eight weeks at a time, is also attached to the library.
