Johnstone of Alva Papers  Bookmark and Share

These are still in the process of being catalogued by Clackmannanshire Archives and the material listed will eventually stretch from the 1550s until well into the twentieth century. At the moment the listed material includes:

  • a Barony of Alva Court Book from 1738 to 1782
  • large-scale plans of parts of the Alva Estate
  • notebooks and journals relating to James Johnstone's overseas travels in the 1820s and 1830s
  • a nineteenth century Minute Book of Alva Archery Club
  • letters to the Laird of Craigdarroch relating to the 1715 Jacobite Rising
  • eighteenth and nineteenth century recipes for various substances
  • estate records, legal deeds and correspondence relating to the Alva, Denny and Selkirkshire areas
  • correspondence relating to the social activities of members of the Johnstone family in Scotland and England and their military careers in India, Demerara and in the Royal Navy

There is a detailed listing of the catalogued material in the Reference Section of Alloa Library, where material is also produced for consultation. This includes an index to the first 80 bundles of correspondence and deeds.

The archive continues to accept private deposits of personal, commercial, club and society material of historical interest.
