Museum Development
Our aim is to make the Museum and Heritage Service as accessible, both physically and intellectually, as possible. At the moment the display area is not very accessible, as it is at first floor level and there is no wheelchair access; our outreach service tries to compensate for this as far as possible.
The development plans for the Museum involve the creation of a new integrated and accessible Museum, Archives and Local History Centre in the former Paton's School, Greenside Street, Alloa. Built in 1864 at the bequest of Alexander Paton, as a school for young employees and the children of employees of Patons' Kilncraigs wool-spinning mill, the building is one of only six industrial schools to have survived in Scotland.
Phase 1 of the development plan was completed in July 2004: this involved the restoration of the structure of the building, including a new roof for the main block, rebuilding aand strengthening areas of vulnerable walling and repointing most of the fabric. The old school is now structurally sound. It is hoped that Phase 2 of the development, which will include the construction of additional storeys on the two annexes and the conversion of the interior to accommodate the new Centre, will begin later this year.
