Built Heritage
Clackmannanshire's built heritage is an intrinsic part of its character and landscape ranging from reminders of its industrial past including the glass cone and mills, to tower houses, stone and iron bridges, Edwardian villas, Playfair buildings and an estate ice house. The important historic buildings and areas are protected through the planning system by their designation as listed buildings and conservation areas.
Listed Buildings
Listed buildings are those buildings which have been included on the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. This list is compiled by Historic Scotland on behalf of Scottish Ministers . Buildings are categorised according to their relative importance:
Category A - Buildings of national or international importance
Category B - Buildings of regional or more than local importance
Category C(S) - Buildings of local importance
The listing procedure seeks to protect the character and to guard against unnecessary loss or damage of our heritage. More details regard listing buildings are available on Historic Scotland's Looking After Our Heritage web pages.
Conservation Areas
Conservation areas are areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. Clackmannanshire has seven conservation areas; Muckhart, Dollar, Tillicoultry, Old Alloa, Alloa Glebe, Clackmannan and Kennet. The Scottish Government has issued a Guide To Conservation Areas in Scotland.
A draft Conservation Area Appraisal has been prepared for the Muckhart Conservation Area. This appraisal was subject to public consultation in 2009.
