Cutting down on Food Waste
Most of us don't realise the amount of food we throw away.
- Over a third of the food we buy is thrown directly in the bin and at least half of this could have been eaten;
- Over £800m worth of food is wasted by consumers in Scotland each year;
- For Clackmannanshire residents, that's an average of £366 per household going straight in the bin.
Wasted food is not only a waste of money, it's also a major contributor to climate change when wasted food rots down to produce greenhouse gases.
Love Food, Hate Waste
The Love Food, Hate Waste campaign targets the reasons why so much food is wasted and offers householders straightforward advice to cut their food bill and reduce Scotland's mountain of wasted food.
Simple steps such as making a shopping list, planning meals and only cooking the right amount can make a big difference towards cutting your waste and saving money.
Shoppers are encouraged to check out the campaign website for a host of tips, hints and recipe ideas to enable them to make the most of the food they buy and prepare.
