Scottish Water is the Authority responsible for supplying domestic water to all properties connected to the public main and for taking away waste water by means of the public sewer. If you have a complaint concerning the water you get from the public supply you should contact Scottish Water on 0800 077 8778 or you can view the Scottish Water Code of Practice. This will give you the information you need to make a complaint and how to follow it up with the Water Industry Commissioner for Scotland if you’re dissatisfied with the outcome.
Businesses should contact Scottish Water on 0800 389 0379 or visit the commercial section of Scottish Water's website for more information on the services available. Environmental Health does sample water from the mains supply when it is used in food production businesses. This is part of the food safety function of the Council and not is part of a routine check of Scottish Water.
In Scotland, lead does not occur naturally in significant concentrations in our water supplies. The problem arises when drinking water comes into contact with lead supply pipes, lead tanks, lead solder joints on copper pipes, or inferior quality brass fittings and taps, particularly for longer periods (e.g. overnight/ weekends / holidays periods). This can result in high lead levels in the drinking water supply.
If you suspect you may have lead pipes, the Council encourages you to undertake further works with a view to establishing whether lead is present and to take steps to replace them; and as a short-term, implement some precautionary measures to protect your health.
