Self Assessment for Minor Adaptations

Small adaptations can make a real difference to the quality of life of a disabled person and help them to continue to live in their own home.

In April 2009, the Council introduced a self assessment for minor adaptations in Council properties.

Minor adaptations include

  • grab rail (internal/external)
  • internal banister
  • metal handrail (external)

Self Assessment form

A Self Assessment for Minor Adaptations form is available to download from this page. Forms are also available in local libraries, health centres and Council offices.

The Housing Occupational Therapy team monitor progress of all self assessment minor adaptations and carry out a telephone check with each tenant to ensure works are completed satisfactorily within a 4 week period.

Major Adaptations

If you are an older person or someone with a disability and have difficulties with walking, you may require major adaptations to your home. Structural alterations to your property are carried out following a community care assessment and recommendation by Social Services.

Major adaptations could be

  • level access shower facility for personal care;
  • widening doors to help you move around your home when using equipment;
  • ramp to enable easy access to your home if you use a wheelchair.

We work alongside colleagues from Health and Social Services to ensure that each adaptation project is well co-coordinated and progressed promptly. All adaptations are undertaken in partnership with technical/design staff and work completed by approved contractors.

On completion of each adaptation project a technical inspection is carried out and where appropriate, equipment is supplied by Social Services.
