What are Additional Support Needs?
The Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 defines additional support needs as applying
- "to children and young people who, for whatever reason, require additional support, long or short term, in order to help them make the most of their education."
(Supporting Children's Learning, Code of Practice).
Many circumstances can have an adverse effect on a child/young person's learning. These are sometimes referred to as 'barriers to learning'.
The Act lists four inter-related factors which may individually or collectively impact on a child or young person's ability to learn:
- Learning environment;
- Family circumstances;
- Disability or health;
- Social or emotional factors.
