Food at Morning Break in Schools
All food and drink that is served within Clackmannanshire schools must meet the nutritional standards as specified within the Schools (Health Promotion & Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007. The standards set for food outwith the school lunch support the principles of a whole school approach to healthy eating. All schools have reviewed and changed the food and drink they currently serve within their morning break service and tuckshops.
Other considerations
- Where enterprise or citizenship projects involve food and drink (including the use of Fair Trade products), pupils and staff should take into account the nutritional regulations.
- The regulations do not apply to food and drink provided as part of a social, cultural or recreational activity such as school discos, sports days, Christmas lunches etc. However in keeping with the ethos of a Health Promoting School, healthier options should be encouraged at these events.
A copy of the regulations can be accessed at www.scotland.gov.uk and further details obtained from

Milk Scheme
Most primary schools in Clackmannanshire operate a Milk Scheme. Under the Scheme, all children who are entitled to free school meals can have a 200ml carton of chilled, semi-skimmed milk at morning break, free of charge.
Other children and their parents can choose to opt-in to the Scheme and pay 20p per day (2011/12 academic session).
Many schools are linking the Milk Scheme with the development of healthy tuckshops to provide a healthy option at morning break.
