School Crossing Patrol Service
School Crossing Patrols are a familiar everyday sight in Britain during school terms and have been for many years. They are respected by parents, teachers and most importantly children.
In 1953, an Act of Parliament was passed which allowed local authorities to set up School Crossing Patrol Services across the country. For the first time people other than Police Officers were allowed to stop traffic.
The Act makes provision for school crossing personnel to be trained by Local Authorities and for them to have authority to stop traffic when they are wearing the approved uniform and carrying the correct ‘STOP’ sign. The Act also makes it an offence for drivers not to stop for a Patrol.
Establishment of Posts
Requests for new sites can come from various sources e.g. schools, School Boards, Parents and local organisations.
All requests are investigated as soon as it is practically possible and measured against set criteria.
Provision of Patrols
There are 32 school crossing patrol sites in Clackmannanshire.
Crossing points are located on busy stretches of road where children cross on their way to and from school. Dealing with today’s traffic means that being a school crossing patrol is not easy at times. As a result, Patrol personnel need to be competent and professional in their work.
Crossing points are manned 190 days per year to cover school terms and holidays must be taken outwith this period.
Recruitment and Selection
All vacancies for permanent posts are advertised in the local media and on ClacksWeb. However, Clackmannanshire Council has an ongoing need for a pool of Relief School Crossing Patrols who can provide cover, often at short notice, when permanent staff are absent from work.
School Crossing Patrol staff are recruited locally. They must have good road sense and must exhibit care and responsibility for the children in their charge.
The ‘Patrol’ must be physically fit, alert, with good hearing and eyesight and be of sober habits. Induction training is given and further training is provided which includes First Aid, Child Protection and Disability Awareness. After training, Patrols require to be competent and confident when stopping road traffic with regard to the safety of all persons concerned. A uniform and pole is supplied to all school crossing personnel.
All personnel employed as school crossers will require an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check before appointment.
