Abercromby Primary School was built in 1951, the first traditional post-war school of its kind in Clackmannan District. It has spacious grounds, with good provision for recreation. The school has very pleasant surroundings and outlook and the building is well maintained. A wildlife garden provides a valuable resource for environmental education.

Photogtaph - AbercrombyThe building originally accommodated eight classrooms, leading from one long corridor with easy access to a wide, paved terrace which extends the whole length of the classes and can be used for outdoor teaching. In addition there is a dining room with servery, a gymnasium and a very grand assembly hall.

In the mid-seventies the main school was extended by the addition of seven annexed classrooms and in 1985 a purpose-built 30 place nursery unit was opened. The nursery building is pyramid shaped and provides a very flexible, functional spacious interior with a first class outdoor play area. The nursery unit has since been extended to accommodate 44 pre-school children and 44 pre-pre-school children.

The school building has a controlled door entry system with appropriate security procedures for all users.

The school serves a mixed, wide-ranging catchment area of local authority and private housing developments.

The success of the school is dependent on the three-way partnership between the pupils, their parents and the staff. Collectively, the aim is to create a school community in which effective learning can take place with equal opportunities provided for pupils to participate actively in their own learning. This is carefully planned across a broad based curriculum matched to pupils' needs. The curriculum incorporates language, mathematics, environmental studies, health education, expressive arts, religious and moral education and personal and social development.

Across the school, pupils are given a wide range of opportunities to take part in enterprise activities. The school participates in the Eco Schools programme to promote a greener environment.

Learning, teaching and attainment are regularly monitored by the headteacher and depute headteacher. Details of this are included in an annual Standards and Quality Report which all parents receive. A strong emphasis is placed on valuing individual achievement and pupils are regularly rewarded for this.

The planned learning programmes, activities and methodologies used by staff enable pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. The school has received accreditation as a health promoting school.

School policies exist in all areas of the curriculum and are reviewed within a whole school development plan. Weekly assemblies are held for pupils. Use of the local environment is encouraged and in addition the children undertake field trips outwith the area to enhance project work. A residential programme of outdoor education is offered at the P6 and P7 stage.

The ethos of the school is based on mutual self-respect between all members of the school community and the development of self-discipline with an acceptance of responsibility for their own actions. A pupil council encourages pupils in P3 - P7 to have a say in the running of the school.

The headteacher operates a collaborative, team-based approach to the management of the school and strives to maintain a high and purposeful profile throughout the school. She is supported in her management by a depute and 2 principal teachers. The staff have a wide range of expertise and experience.

There is an open-door policy and a framework for two-way communication for parents who are actively encouraged to be involved in their children's education. The parents are very supportive and co-operative. A newly formed Parent Council has replaced the former School Board and PTA. The Council aims to promote active parental involvement in children's learning and in the life of the school. A sub group continues to organise social and fund raising activities throughout the session. From these efforts many desirable resources, including playground equipment, have been purchased.

There are well established links with other schools in the local community and with the associated secondary school, Lornshill Academy.

The school welcomes students on placement and senior pupils from local secondary schools undertaking work experience.

The school is well resourced as a whole including interactive whiteboards in all classrooms.

A range of extra curricular activities is offered to pupils along with a varied sports programme. Pupils in P4/P5 have timetabled swimming lessons and P7 pupils are able to go ski-ing. From P5 tuition is available for individual pupils to learn piano, chanter, violin, brass and woodwind instruments.

Finally, community involvement is also very much part of the spirit of Abercromby School and its activities, and a range of events which the community can attend is organised throughout the session.
