Current roll: 840
Alloa Academy is a six year comprehensive school serving the town of Alloa in Clackmannanshire. Its roll is rising with over 840 pupils in session 2007/08 and projected to rise to over 900 within two years. It serves the town of Alloa only and has four primary schools associated with it: Claremont, Sunnyside, Park and St John's. It also welcomes pupils from St Mungo's Primary. The school currently has 74 teaching staff. The school is truly comprehensive and the pupil intake varies from a very middle class area to an area of severe deprivation. All pupils wear full school uniform.
Alloa is an industrial town, and while the amount of industry has receded in the past, there is substantial industry still in the area including glass making.
The town is situated between Stirling and Kincardine on the north of the river Forth and is easily reached from Stirling (7 miles) by the A907 or from Lothian and Falkirk by the M9, M876 and the Kincardine Bridge or from Fife directly from Dunfermline.
Pupils receive a broad curriculum in S1/2 with setting of pupils in various subjects possible from the start of S1. Pupils follow the recognised path in S3/4 involving Standard Grades although some SQA Higher Still courses are also on offer in certain subjects. A broad selection of Higher Courses are on offer for S5/6 together and all levels of Higher Still courses are offered in most subject areas. The school has very good relationships with Forth Valley College in the area.
The school has adopted a positive approach to its pupils and is happy to praise them at every opportunity and is in the forefront of development of positive discipline structures. It has also introduced an assertive discipline policy to all classrooms which combines known and agreed standards with praise and reward. This policy has been responsible for the school winning several awards including the CBI Celebration Bus 2001, Barclays New Futures Awards 2001, the Scottish Schools Ethos Award 2002/03 and highly commended in the Scottish Education Awards 2005.
The building itself was renovated in part in 1990 with a new front and staffroom being added to the school. It is to be completely replaced at the latest by October 2008 with a brand new school situated in Bowhouse Road, Alloa.
