Claremont Primary School is one of five primary schools serving the town of Alloa. The school dates from 1967 when it replaced Alloa Primary School following an extended house building programme in the Fairyburn, Braehead and Redwell areas.
The building is of a flat roof construction, the steep sloping site necessitating a single storey to the west accommodating one nursery class, two infant classrooms, staffroom, school office, gym/assembly/dining hall. The remainder of the building to the east is of a two storey construction which includes a general purpose room, stage area which at present houses the computer suite and teaching/learning resources. The remainder of this part of the building provides three classrooms on each floor with adjacent toilets and cloakroom facilities. A mobile building accommodates two classrooms. The school library is located on the lower floor.
The school has very pleasant surroundings and outlook and the building is well maintained. We share extensive grass playing fields with Alloa Academy, our associated secondary school to which most of our pupils transfer to complete their secondary education. There are well established links with Alloa Academy.
The school serves a mixed wide ranging catchment area of local authority and private housing developments.
The success of the school is dependent on the three-way partnership between the pupils, their parents and the staff. Collectively, the aim is to create a school community in which effective learning can take place with opportunities provided for pupils to participate actively in their own learning across a broad-based curriculum incorporating information and communications technology (ICT), environmental studies, English language, French (P6 & P7), mathematics, expressive arts, religious & moral education and personal & social development.
The nursery caters for per and pre-pre school children, offering morning and afternoon sessions of 2.5 hours. The maximum number of children in each session is 30.
The ethos of the school is based on mutual self-respect among all members of the school community and the development of self-discipline with an acceptance of responsibility for their own actions.
There is an open-door policy for parents who are encouraged to be involved in their children's education. The parents are very supportive and co-operative. A very active PTA organises successful social and fundraising activities throughout the session and from these efforts many desirable items of equipment have been purchased.
A Parent Council meets regularly and aims to develop further the links between home and school.
School policies exist are reviewed within a whole school improvement plan. Frequent assemblies are held for pupils. Use of the local environment is encouraged and in addition the children undertake field trips outwith the area to enhance project work. A week's residential programme of outdoor education is offered at the P7 stage.
The school is well resourced as a whole and the resources are centralised appropriately.
Extra curricular activities vary and may include football, rugby, badminton, basketball, athletics and drama. A varied sports programme is offered to pupils during good weather. P4 and P5 pupils have timetabled swimming lessons and P7 pupils are timetabled for ski-ing lessons on the dry slope in nearby Tillicoultry.
Both staff and parents make a positive contribution towards a caring and productive learning environment within the school and in the wider community.
