Coalsnaughton Primary School was built in 1898. An extension was added in the 1970s. The school is situated in the small village of Coalsnaughton and its catchment area includes Devonside. It is the main focal point of the village and maintains strong community links.

The building has 4 classrooms, well stocked library/refurbished ICT Suite, gym/dining room, resource room and nursery class. The P1/2 classroom and nursery share an open area. The school grounds include a woodland garden and grass area. An outdoor stage and grass 'ampitheatre' style seating has been created to provide excellent opportunities for drama and environmental education.

The school enjoys close working links with Alva Academy and the five other associated primary schools - Alva, Menstrie, Muckhart, Tillicoultry and Strathdevon.

Photogtaph - Coalsnaughton Primary SchoolAt Coalsnaughton Primary we work hard as a team to create a secure and positive learning environment where each pupil feels valued and is encouraged to learn. We promote a sense of community and recognise the importance of each individual pupil in our school.

Staff work hard to provide high quality learning and teaching experiences. They actively promote an atmosphere of achievement and give due consideration to the progress of all pupils.

The curriculum is based on 5-14 Scottish Guidelines and is carefully planned and matched to pupil's needs.

Curriculum programmes include:

  • Reading: Clackmannanshire Early Learning Programme, Story World, Literacy World
  • Writing - North Lanarkshire and Scholastic writing projects
  • Mathematics: IPM (P1-P7)and a wide variety of additional materials
  • Science: Stanley Thornes and Renfrewshire Science
  • Technology - LCP and Renfrewshire Technology
  • RME - LCP

We have a visiting Additional Support Needs teacher on a weekly basis

The early stages are taught Clackmannanshire's synthetic phonics programme. Classrooms are equipped with a PC, laptop and all classrooms have an interactive whiteboard. A whole school programme for ICT is taught in the networked computer suite. 20 new flat screen computers have been installed.

The Expressive Arts programme is supported by a team of visiting specialist teachers in music, (including guitar, singing) and PE (including swimming and ski-ing) and art. Borders Art programme is used as a base for Art/Design planning.

We have a democratically elected Pupil Council which meets regularly to plan projects and discuss concerns on a regular basis.

The Eco group have implemented environmental improvements and organised a whole school Eco days. We have been awarded our green flag award.

Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting and expressive arts activities during the school year. An after school activity programme is well established offering story club, baking, art and craft, football, basketball, running, Radio Waves and Junior Challenge.

Contact between parents and school is strong. The Parent Forum meets regularly and parents actively help in many areas of the school. The Parent Forum organises many successful social and fundraising events throughout the school session. These events are well supported by the local community.

Mrs Paterson welcomes enquiries at any time and will be pleased to show parents and visitors around the school.
