Lochies School is a school for Primary aged children with severe/complex Additional Support Needs. There are at present 21 children in the school which shares a site with a mainstream Primary on the edge of the village of Sauchie, next to Alloa. It serves the whole of Clackmannanshire with all the pupils being bused or taxied into school.
The school has 4 classrooms, a GP room, a Soft Play room, Multi-Sensory Room and Sensory Experiential Room as well as two smaller working areas used as a base for a LA Verbal Behavioural Analysis (VBA) programme for a small number of autistic children.
There is a Headteacher’s room and office next to the front door and the Deputy Headteacher has an office at the top of the corridor where the classrooms are.
A purpose built play area and youth zone are within the school grounds and a smaller enclosed play area is shared by both on site schools.
There are presently 4 teachers, a headteacher, a Depute Headteacher, 10 Supervisory Assistants, a Home School Link Worker and a full time administrator in the school, with the VBA programme being delivered by a team of support workers.
There are 2 Speech and Language Therapists, an Occupational Therapist and a Physiotherapist working part time in the school supporting pupils, staff and families with programmes of work linking in to the Individualised Educational Programmes which every child has.
These IEPs correspond with the 5-14 guidelines and are delivered through the Synthetic Phonics Programme, IPM (maths) and the elaborated curriculum with sensory approaches used for those children who require it.
The school is visited weekly by a music therapist, who works with individual chldren and groups. Movement programmes, lunch clubs, after-school clubs and holiday provision are offered by the Home School Link Worker.
The school works very closely with Psychological Service, Social Services and the Health Board to support the pupils and their families.
School meals are cooked in the near-by meals distribution centre for Clackmannanshire and all pupils are provided with a free school lunch. Special diets are also catered for.
The school is part of the Healthy Eating Initiative and operates a Healthy Tuck Shop which is organised and run by senior pupils. Lochies received Health Promotion Level 2 accreditation in March 2008.
Parents are encouraged to be involved in the education of their child. They are invited to review meetings when they are given the opportunity to discuss their child’s individual educationalised programmes with class teachers and any therapists involved with the child.
They are also welcome at any time to discuss any concerns or issues.
It is the policy of Lochies School to encourage and support inclusion of pupils whenever possible.
There are numerous opportunities for social inclusion with Deerpark Primary in play situations, the sharing of the dining hall, and end of term church services.
The school has established links with the local community, making good use of local amenities as well as in the nearby town of Alloa.
