St. John's Primary was established as an Episcopal school in 1853, initially in Broad Street. As the school grew and developed, it moved several times, to King Street, Castle Street, Grant Street and finally, in March 1992 to Grange Road. It is no longer linked to the Episcopal church and in consequence is non-denominational.
The present school, built in 1908, is spacious and bright, accommodating 290 pupils. A nursery class, built in 1999, is designed to accommodate 30 pre-pre and 30 pre-school pupils. The school serves the West End of Alloa and is very much a part of the community.
The school enjoys close working links with Alloa Academy and four associated primary schools: Claremont Primary, Park Primary, Sunnyside Primary and St. Mungo's Primary.
Our school comprises of composite and single stream classes. We are a well resourced school and offer a wide range of teaching modes resulting in high but achievable goals, both in discipline and the curriculum.
The school operates a buzzer entry system.
A very comprehensive staff handbook and school brochure are available.
Our main text include:

Religious Education
RME has been well developed and a careful structure of work planned to fulfil the requirements of 5-14 and our own pupils' needs. This area of the curriculum has also been well resourced.

We provide a variety of After School Club activities throughout the session. We are involved in Soccer 7's and Fun 4's, organised by Clackmannanshire Council Football Development Officer. We participate in rugby sessions and festivals. All our primary 7 pupils are offered the opportunity to attend an outdoor activity centre in Perthshire, at a centre called P.G.L. Dalguise.
The school had a successful inspection in 2002 and has implemented the action points raised, to a high standard.
In St. John's we pride ourself on the positive ethos we foster and promote within all aspects of school life. We have a Buddy Club in school where senior pupils are trained in Buddying strategies for younger pupils. We run whole-school 'Golden Time' activities. We have a supportive Parent Council and very active Parent Staff Association whose fundraising efforts allow us to supplement a variety of resources, such as art equipment and computer software. We have strong community links and an open door policy for parents emphasising our belief in the co-operative role between home and school when addressing the developmental needs of our pupils socially, academically and emotionally.
We have continuous assessment and development of school policies both as a staff and in stage working groups. We have development teams comprising of teaching and support staff. These teams focus on areas highlighted in our development plan.
Pupils play a strong roll in our Pupil Council and Eco-Committee groups.
We welcome enquiries and visitors to school and would be pleased to arrange a visit with anyone interested in any aspect of our school community.
