Strathdevon Primary School was opened in 1965. It is a co-educational and non-denominational school. The school is pleasantly situated between East Burnside and the Market Park with the Civic Centre adjacent to the East and the Health Centre to the West. The location of the school is further enhanced by views of the Ochil Hills to the North and open playing fields to the South.
The school building contains 9 classrooms, a large nursery classroom, a resource and meeting room, a computer suite equipped with 33 networked PCs, a youth and community room and a large assembly/dining hall. The school has been refurbished, providing us with a very modern, comfortable and attractive learning and teaching environment. The environment of our school is also enhanced by 3 internal "garden" quadrangles, an activity, a cultivated and wildlife garden. The internal gardens are currently being refurbished. These 3 integral gardens provide a valuable context for learning. A playground improvement group is actively involved in plans to refurbish our playground.
A controlled door entry system secures the nursery and main entrances.
The school serves a community with a predominance of privately owned and rented housing with some Local Authority housing. The school is also the focus for a wide range of out of schools hours activities, e.g. Breakfast Boogie club, Athletics, Badminton, Football etc.
At Strathdevon Primary we aim to provide a high quality learning and teaching environment where each child can be helped to achieve their full potential. This is underpinned by the promotion of a positive ethos. We aim to provide a happy, quiet, purposeful learning environment where each pupil feels valued and has freedom to learn. An atmosphere of achievement and consideration for the needs of others is promoted.
We provide a broad cohesive and progressive curriculum incorporating environmental studies, language, mathematics, expressive arts, religious and moral education and personal and social development. The school offers a range of formative experiences outwiththe formal curriculum.
We endeavour to establish a meaningful partnership with parents and pupils based on an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child's education. The school is currently forming a very active Parent Council and a range of parent interest groups has also been established.
We give serious consideration to the views of our pupils. Our democratically elected Pupil Council meets regularly to discuss issues raised by the pupils. All classes in the school are represented on the Council. Each session pupils are elected onto our Eco-committee. The school has been awarded 2 Eco Green Flags.
Two senior pupils have the responsibility of being our Junior Road Safety Officers. Each session they organise a Safer Routes to School Week. Our Pupil Council successfully obtained a grant to set up a Healthy Eating Tuckshop. Parent volunteers help our Council members to prepare fruit kebabs and 'smoothies'. These initiatives are part of our aspiration to be a Health Promoting School.
School policies exist in all areas of the curriculum. Parents have ready access to these policies, the School Improvement Plan and the Standards and Quality Report on request to the school office.
Assemblies are held weekly. A partnership exists with all the local churches and our chaplains jointly present our Tuesday assembly on a rota basis with classes. A positive discipline policy operates in school with a "House" and "Golden Time" rewards systems actively encouraging pupils to achieve the highest possible standards of behaviour and achievement.
Use of our local environment is encouraged. Staff and pupils of P7 join with our Hillfoots primary schools and Alva Academy for an exciting 7 day transition programme which includes 2 induction days at Alva Academy, 2 personal challenge days and 3 residential experience at Dalguise. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sporting and expressive arts activities during and after school hours.
There are well established links with the associated secondary school, Alva Academy.
Strathdevon Primary is very much a focus in the local community and our links with outside agencies are many. Through a partnership with staff, pupils, parents and the wider community we continue to provide the highest possible standards of learning and teaching.
