Sunnyside Primary opened in 1894 and until 1998 was housed in the original sandstone building. In August 1998 the school moved to the present new accommodation comprising classrooms, library, computer room and games/ assembly hall. Sunnyside Nursery, housed in the old building, was designed as a 60/60 nursery class. It is a bright, attractive and safe learning environment where children are encouraged by a dedicated nursery teacher to become confident and independent individuals, ready for school.

In April 2006, the refurbishment of the top floor of the old building created 2 new bright, attractive classrooms for P7s, a music/drama room, a large resource room, office space and a meeting room.

Photogtaph - Sunnyside Primary SchoolThe school has excellent facilities and a hard-working staff. It is engaged in innovative programmes including accelerated learning strategies, and a programme to develop thinking skills and emotional intelligence.

Sunnyside Primary offers After School Clubs which support and extend pupils learning and also offers many extra curricular opportunities to pupils in arts and sporting activities. Out of School Care Kidzone at Sunnyside, opened in August 2006. This can provide 21 places for children whose parents require this service. We maintain good links with the community, including a close relationship with Ludgate House Senior Citizens.

The school has an active Parent Council who work hard on behalf of the school.

As a school our aims are:

  • to create a stable and happy working environment where all children can grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally;
  • to provide a broadly based curriculum aimed at extending the full potential of each individual child in the school;
  • to prepare children to meet with confidence the challenge of secondary education by the end of P7;
  • to work in partnership with parents in encouraging the necessary standards of self-discipline, good manners and a positive attitude towards the feeling of others at home and in school.

Miss McAlpine, Headteacher, welcomes enquiries from prospective parents. She is always pleased to arrange for visitors to be shown around the school and have opportunity to discuss the work of the school.
