School Travel Plans

What is a school travel plan?

A school travel plan (STP) is a document produced by the school which takes account of all of the issues relevant to journeys to and from that individual school. It should include concerns about safety and health, and ideas on how improvements can be made.

The STP is a basis for measuring change and when approved by the school board it can become a formal statement of school policy. A well thought out STP can be an instrument for drawing down funds for improvements and initiating new projects.

Who should be involved?

Anyone who you think could benefit your STP. This could include, pupils, parents, teachers, School Travel Coordinator, the School Board, local residents, councillors, road safety officers, local police officers and health and environmental promotion teams.

Remember to keep the pupils of your school fully involved in the STP process.The pupils are well placed to point out the difficulties that they encounter when travelling to and from school.
