Search tips
The ClacksWeb search engine indexes all web pages, and Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word files contained on the site, and supports complex boolean searches which will allow you to find exactly what you are looking for. Here are some tips for getting the most out of the search:
Simple searches
For a quick, simple search just type the keywords you are looking for into the search box at the top of the page, and click 'Go'. This will search for pages which contain all of the words you enter. For example, searching for parliamentary elections will find all pages which contain both words.
Boolean searches
To allow you more control over search results the search engine supports complex boolean searches in both the simple and advanced searches using the following syntax:
& - logical AND
For example searching for Lifelong & Learning will return pages or documents which contain both words 'Lifelong' and 'Learning'. Note that this is the same as searching for Lifelong Learning using the simple search.
| - Logical OR
For example searching for Lifelong | Learning will return pages or documents which contain the word 'Lifelong' or the word 'Learning'.
~ - Logical NOT
For example searching for Parliamentary ~ Elections will return pages or documents which contain the word 'Parliamentary' but not the word 'Elections'.
() - Grouping
You can compose more complex queries by grouping clauses with brackets. For example searching for (parliamentary | elections) ~scottish will find pages and documents which contain either 'parliamentary' or 'elections' but not the word 'scottish'.
Advanced search
The Advanced Search allows you to refine your search even further, selecting which types of documents to search, whether to search for parts of words, whether to search for synonyms of search terms and many more options.
Search results
Search results are ordered in descending order of relevance by default. This image shows the various parts of search results:
