Abuse
Abuse can mean different things to different children, and can happen once or many times.
Although growing up can be difficult, most children and young people receive the love and care they need to develop into healthy, happy young adults. But some children are hurt, neglected and used by adults or other children. Younger children may not be aware that what is happening to them is abuse.
Childline describes various types of abuse:
- Physical abuse is...
- when children are hurt or injured by parents or other people.
- Sexual abuse is...
- when children are forced or persuaded into sexual acts or situations by others.
- Emotional abuse is...
- when children are not given love, approval or acceptance.
- Neglect is...
- when parents or others looking after children do not provide them with proper food, warmth, shelter, clothing, care and protection.
Abuse can take many forms and children and young people can be affected either directly, or indirectly as a member of a household.

- Feel Think Do, a sexual abuse prevention programme
- Feel, Think, Do is a Sexual Abuse Prevention Programme that was developed by NHS Forth Valley in partnership with Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Falkirk Councils. The programme was launched in 2007 and has now been implemented in the majority of primary schools across Forth Valley.
In May 2009 an evaluation of the pack was commissioned to assess the experience of pupils,
teachers and parents who have participated in Feel, Think, Do. The programme and pack evaluated very positively, it was viewed as a valuable resource that supported teachers and parents to address the difficult and sensitive issue of sexual abuse.
As a result of this evaluation and the introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence, the pack and
training for teachers has been revised and will be available to schools from November 2010.
