Supported Employment Services Users

These are profiles of real people who use Supported Employment Services.

Alexander, aged 18 years

I wanted to work before I was referred to SES. I was at the local college where I attended courses that I thought would help me access work. However this proved more difficult than I anticipated and this was not the way forward.
My Mum was aware of SES and how they could help me, she made a referral for me. An initial home visit was made and a keyworker was allocated soon after.
Numerous homevists were arranged by my keyworker where I could discuss what I wanted to do and what I was interested in. From there I was referred to "Everyday Skills" this helped me with my reading and writing and for me to pass my theory and practical driving test.
Then we discussed job tasters. I said I was interested in the fire service, as at that time I was in the fire cadets. With some discussion, my keyworker said that she would get in contact and see what could be done.
Within a few weeks a job taster was arranged with the local fire station's Community Fire Officer. This involved working with him, going into primary schools and teaching the children the dangers of fire. Having this taster gave me the experience of working in a real working environment. Working as a part of a team, and learning about health and safety.
Once this was finished we then discussed future employment. I was interested in manual work, but found this difficult to access as I was only 17. A local supermarket had opened up and we thought this would be a good opportunity to get on the ladder to work, and it would look good on my CV, until I was old enough to get manual work.
My keyworker supported me throughout the stages of applications, interviews, induction and dealing with benefits. Now I have a permanent job in the supermarket, working 34 hours a week.
This has given me the confidence to do things. I can independently travel about and afford my own car.
SES gave me the confidence and support to achieve and sustain employment. Even though I am in full time employment my keyworker support is still there and keeps in regular contact. If I ever need anything I know I can just call, which is reassuring.
I am grateful for all the support my keyworker has given me and my family.

Stewart, aged 27

I have been with Supported Employment Service since it started back in 2001.
I was referred by my Social Worker after my dad had enquired about what other services were available to me.
A home visit was arranged by Key Workers to find out my interests.
I explained to them I had been to college and enjoyed cookery and would be interested to continue with it.
A cookery group was set up at the Alloa Centre, making tablet and cakes, which were then sold.
From there a training cafe was set up in the middle of Alloa called the Eat It Cafe, where I was one of the first people to work there. I was involved in serving customers, using the till, preparing food and tidying.
Left Click in 2004 and got a job with a local social firm, Candies Cuisine, where I have a permanent full-time job.
I enjoy my job. Having a job has given me more confidence and independence and have money to spend on holidays and clothes.
Supported Employment Service has helped me a lot and I feel without this service I would never have seen myself in a job or where I am today."
